If you enjoy mexican food then visit www.tasteoftexas.co.uk. Great recipes and the best gourmet salsa, bbq sauce, spices etc directly from Texas. Enjoy

Hi Paul

I guess, photos are a personal thing and you're never going to get it right for everyone. For me, I want to see the finished product and I guess if there is an unusual or tricky procedure a photo might be useful, but that is all. So, yes for me, you have too many photos, but I wouldn't want none at all. But for others, it's probably just right. That probably hasn't helped much!

That is the problem with searches, if they don't work as you expect then they can be really annoying.

With regards to photographs, on getmecooking.com we want enough photos to make it easy to follow recipes, but not too many to be distracting. What do you think about the balance so far? We are thinking of adding an option to allow users to turn on and off all photos on a recipe page.

I agree, a search feature is most useful. I tried to put a google search box on my blog, but it was useless - didn't find more than half my posts, so I got rid of it. In fact I find google as a search tool really annoying as Kate said, it rarely links directly to what you are looking for and often doesn't even link indirectly - very frustrating!

Also agree with Paul about photos being important BUT find too many in one post really annoying. A picture to attract you, but then I want the information.

Hi Kate,

I am glad you said that because that is the main issue that I have with cooking sites (even the really big ones). i.e. search for 'Tomato soup' and you often get a very poor result.

That is something that I am working on right now with getmecooking.com, I have designed a better method of searching for recipes - i.e. not just text entry (although we already have dynamic text search).

Plus we want the results to appear to the the user in a useful but summarised format, so they can quickly find what they want. It is actually quite hard to design a search function that is powerful but simple to use (and not off-putting to users), so it will be interesting to see what our users think of it once it is up (it will be a few weeks).

Pictures are also a main feature on GetMeCooking. I can't stand recipe sites that don't include pictures with recipes. On GetMeCooking we have pictures for every recipe as well as most of the steps.

BTW I like your blog and photos on Chinese Tea Eggs!

Paul,
I only realised this weekend that a search feature is the most useful - and most lacking - feature on most blogs. Sometimes search engines just give you a directional link to the blog not the actual recipe and for a blog that has been running for several years you can have pages of distractions. I lose hours of my life enjoying other peoples' blogs distracted from the particular recipe or hint I'm actually looking for. In fact, I just did that whilst writing this message.
So a search feature, and pictures!
