Cranberries out of the Bag - Part 1 - Sauce

This post is the first in a series of four. Check back tomorrow for part two.

The first time I saw cranberry sauce I had no idea what the red, wiggly disc wedged between mashed potatoes and a slice of turkey could be. With a mother from England and a father from Eastern Europe, beets were the onl… Continue

Hi Carol and thanks for the message. I know Riverford well and have been to their main depot down in Devon to meet Guy Watson, the boss and founder, and to see the operation. They get farmers growing on contract and then distribute round the country. It is good produce and very efficient, but quite a lot of food miles. I always recommend people, like your daughter, ask where all the produce is grown and look for a more local supplier if there is one. It is worth noting that even the most local growers also put the occasional foreign produce in their box at the time of year when very little is growing.

Thanks for adding me as a friend Carol. It would be fantastic if you could write about, or tell people, about BigBarn. We are working hard to get more people buying local food direct from producers, giving most cheaper fresher food. And the more they buy the cheaper and more diverse the range of local food becomes. Changing the supermarket habit however is more difficult than I thought.
