I agree with you about Nigella Lawson, love her book but not too impressed with her stuff generally.

What writers or books on food do you consider classics? Not just recipe books, but books on food, eating whatever.

Chinese 5 spice - Zambian style

Since coming back to Zambia, I have developed certain cravings (and no, I’m not pregnant!). This is because some things you just can’t get here or they are not as nice as back home or they are so expensive. I have been in mourning for cheese, good quality chocolate, mozzarella di bufala (*sigh*)Thai and Chinese food. p style="text-align: left;">

My flight is booked and I leave this Friday for Zambia! My husband is already out there and I miss him lots.
We plan to be there for about 2 years and it's so nice tp be going back, this is where we met when we were both volunteers.

I think people often have quite negative view of that are… Continue

I use river cobbler for this dish simply because it is incredibly cheap and keeps its shape when c… Continue

Mmm, breakfast... Sometimes I wish I could eat breakfast all day. During the week I have porridge, usually with dates, and sometimes a boiled egg with toast, too. At the weekends, it's any number of eggy combinations. Yesterday I had spicy poached e…

...Certainly not 'Garlic and Sapphires' by Ruth Reichl. I just bought it (cheaply, thank god) and put it down after two chapters. Totally dislocated writing and , quite frankly, a boring story. For me, the daddy of all is Kitchen Confidential by An…

My own personal favourite is smoked salmon or Mackerel with scrambled eggs. Not what you'd think of for 'healthy' but all good fats and lots of omega 3!!

Thanks Alicia - Got it now. The pearled spelt is the spelt berries with the outer husk taken off - a bit like polished white rice instead of brown. We make cheese from time to time and use the whey for making sauerkraut and other fermented foodstuf…

Oh, what is whey syrup? And pearled spelt - how is this different to spelt berries / grains? It's so interesting to hear about unfamiliar foodstuffs.

I used the River Cottage Bread book recipe for crumpets... it worked in the end! I think next time I do them it will be a lot easier. Definitely worth a go, though.

Liz - I'm also a Bovril fan - love it on my toast in the mornings. I used to have to send it to my son in Toronto - but apparently they can now buy it there!
